A route survey is a check of the actual route a load will take, before the state will issue the permit: overhead clearances, turning radii at every intersection, utility lines, pavement and shoulder width, and the bridges the load will cross. Most states trigger one by dimension — a stated width, height or length — and some also require a separate bridge analysis by an engineer.
Two costs sit here and only one of them is a state fee. The agency's charge to review the survey is published by most states and is quotable. The engineer's own fee for producing the analysis is a private cost with no published schedule, and any quote that omits it while implying completeness is understating the move.
